F1 Ladies – Williams F1

Gabriela Tarkanyi (Maldonado)

Gabriela is the wife of Maldonado. A Venezualan journalist, Gabriela is often seen at races, supporting Maldonado. She is often seen with Williams test driver Susie Wolff in the garage. She has been seen a lot less since it was announced she was pregnant with their first child. Gabriela was born in November 1982. They were married at the end of 2012.

Emilia Pikkarainen (Bottas)

Emilia is the girlfriend of Bottas. Born in 1992 she is a professional Finnish swimmer and competed at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. She hold the Finnish records in 50-meter butterfly (26,90), 100-meter butterfly (59,02), 200-meter butterfly (2m10,89) and 200-meter individual medley (2m14,23).
Emilia is often seen at races supporting Bottas, alongside Gabriela. At the Monaco Grand Prix she took part in the Charity fashion show at the Amber Lounge.

Toto Wollf (Wolff)

Toto is the husband of Susie Wolff. While technically not a lady, he is included due to being the partner of a Williams driver. Susie is the Williams development driver to Williams F1. Born in 1972, Toto met Susie while she was competing in DTM, and they were married in October 2011.
Toto is currently the Executive director of Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team, having previously worked for Williams F1. Due to his role with Mercedes Toto is at every race, although both Toto and Susie refuse to talk F1 at home due to being on different teams. Toto has been supporting his wife in her quest to get a race seat in F1, but is not the reason for her current position at Williams.

Belgium GP 2013 – The Race

The Race

After the ever-changing weather conditions throughout the weekend the race was an extremely dry affair, which cost some drivers who had gone for a wet/dry set up. One such driver was Hamilton, who had a good start off the line, but was taken by Vettel before the end of the first lap. Vettel would go on to lead the rest of the race, in his normal dominant style.

While there wasn’t too much action at the front of the race, there was plenty of it in the midfield. From 4th to 16th there was constant overtaking, and even 3 cars abreast going into Eu Rouge. This risque driving got the better of some drivers, with Di Resta taking the fall. Coming into the bus stop chicane, Maldonado, Sutil, Di Resta and Gutierrez were all vying for the same spot on the track. As the came on to the home straight Maldonado got a slight tap from Sutil, and then took a late decision to dive into the pits, going right into the back of Di Resta. Di Resta retired, while Maldonado got a 10 second stop and go penalty, something I have not seen for a long time.

Elsewhere, Raikkonen’s 38 race finishing spree came to an end, with a brake failure. In the first part of the race Raikkonen’s brakes were sending out black dust at every breaking zone, and glowing an angry red. It was towards the middle of the race that he had what looked like a front brake failure, when trying to overtake Massa he found himself going much deeper into the corner than was normal. He immediately went into the pits to retire, with a call to his team to let them know the issue.

MY POINTS

The big loser in my points this week was Raikkonen, who went from 2nd to 4th due to his retirement. Vettel continued his stay at the top, while Hamilton jumped into 2nd, with no retirements for the season.

Here is the top 5:

1) Vettel – 42 points
2) Hamilton – 48 points
3) Alonso – 57 points
4) Raikkonen – 63 points
5) Webber – 65 points

Check out the whole updated table under the Point System tab.

FANTASY RACERS

In Fantasy Racer it is Callum’s 2nd Team at the top, scoring 628 points this week, the best of the 8 Engine Rule private league. My team 8enginerule could only manage 473 points this week.

We now have 2 weeks until the European part of the season continues. Next race will be in Italy. Can Vettel continue his dominance towards a 4th World Championship, or will someone come up to stop him?

Belguim GP 2013 – Qualifying

It was an exciting qualifying session, with the weather playing a huge part in it.

Q1

Q1 was all about getting a lap together in the wet/dry conditions. The correct tyres was the important part of the puzzle, and there were some surprise drivers making it through to Q2. As the checkered flag fell both Marussia’s had made it through, along with the Catherham of Van der Garde, who had the 3rd fastest time of Q1!

Out: Pastor Maldonado, Jean-Eric Vergne, Daniel Ricciardo, Valtteri Bottas, Esteban Gutierrez and Charles Pic.

Q2

Q2 was again dominated by the weather, and would finish with 3 drivers getting their best ever qualifying result! It was touch and go for a few drivers as they tried to make it through. Both Hamilton and Button left their best lap till late, but eventually made it through to the top 10 shoot out.

Out: Nico Hulkenberg, Adrian Sutil, Sergio Perez, Giedo Van Der Garde, Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton.

Q3

Q3 started with a wet track, although majority of the drivers went out on the slicks. Only Di Resta took his time and went out on Intermediate tyres. His flying lap stood on top on the timesheets for much of the session, and it was looking like he might get his first pole. However, the track began to dry, and Rosberg seemed to be on fire, posting a fast lap in difficult wet conditions, and an even faster lap as it dried. As the checkered flag fell it was Webber, Vettel and Hamilton to finish a lap, and as the track dried they were all fighting for pole. Both Webber and Vettel took provisional pole, but Hamilton came through on a storming lap to take his 4th pole in a row, and his 5th of the season.

The Grid

1) Lewis Hamilton
2) Sebastian Vettel
3) Mark Webber
4) Nico Rosberg
5) Paul Di Resta
6) Jenson Button
7) Romain Grosjean
8) Kimi Raikkonen
9) Fernando Alonso
10) Felipe Massa
11) Nico Hulkenberg
12) Adrian Sutil
13) Sergio Perez
14) Giedo Van Der Garde
15) Jules Bianchi
16) Max Chilton
17) Pastor Maldonado
18) Jean-Eric Vergne
19) Daniel Ricciardo
20) Valtteri Bottas
21) Esteban Gutierrez
22) Charles Pic

After a 3 week break, and a quick test at Silverstone, who do you think will win the Hungarian Grand Prix?

Young Driver’s Test – Day 2

After the first day I complained about the lack of commentary for a very well publicised F1 test. Well Day 2 was no different, and I have heard from my official source at the track (Thanks Peter!), who was at Silverstone on Wednesday, that it is even worse for those at the track.

According to my source,

“Yesterday there was not even any live commentary at the circuit so we were not aware of any lap times. A periodic announcement mentioned a few drivers’ names and also stated that lap times would not be released until the day had ended. It also stated that many teams were working on their car behind closed pit garage doors to prevent spying.”

Here are the results and amount of laps from day 2:

1. Daniel Ricciardo, Toro Rosso, 1:32.972, 48 laps.
2. Carlos Sainz, Toro Rosso, 1:33.016, 39 laps.
3. Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull, 1:33.187, 59 laps.
4. Davide Valsecchi, Lotus, 1:33.554, 91 laps.
5. Oliver Turvey, McLaren, 1:33.864, 97 laps.
6. James Calado, Force India, 1:33.957, 47 laps.
7. Antonio Felix da Costa, Red Bull, 1:33.958, 19 laps
8. Davide Rigon, Ferrari, 1:34.053, 97 laps.
9. Pastor Maldonado, Williams, 1:34.116, 71 laps.
10. Nico Hulkenberg, Sauber, 1:34.224, 52 laps.
11. Daniel Juncadella, Williams, 1:34.631, 33 laps.
12. Robin Frijns, Sauber, 1:34.731, 17 laps,
13. Will Stevens, Caterham, 1:36.082, 98 laps.
14. Paul Di Resta, Force India, 1:36.356, 41 laps.
15. Rodolfo Gonzalez, Marussia, 1:37.949, 92 laps.

The big talk of Day 2 was Ricciardo’s job interview of sorts at Red Bull. After beaching in the gravel he managed to set the 3rd fastest time of the day (as well as the first in his Toro Rosso) and got 59 laps under his belt. We will have to wait and see if he gets the vacant Webber Seat at Red Bull, but I would say it all went pretty well for him.

Friday see’s Susie Wolff in the Williams. I know I will be hoping for a solid day for her as a huge supporter of Women in F1. Come on Susie!!!!

My Day At Silverstone!

On Friday 28th of June my F1 dreams came true, I got to go to Silverstone. Not only did I get to see the track, but I got to watch the cars going round for their two Friday Free Practice sessions. Sitting at Club corner I watched as the cars navigated the wet track of the morning, I saw Pic lose control and hit the barriers, before his car was moved to underneath our grandstand to sit out the rest of the session. I looked on as the track dried, Rosberg went quickest and Massa crashed for the third weekend in a row.

The weekend before the British Grand Prix I had just finished my first week of my new job (I am working in HR during the summer between my 2nd and 3rd years of University). I had gone back to my house at University with the car to pick up the stuff I needed for the summer I had been unable to carry on the train. When I got home my dad told me he had received a very exciting text message. He had heard from a family member, who had a spare ticket to join him at the Friday Practice for the British Grand Prix. Well there were a lot of girlish squeals and hand flapping at the prospect, I just had to get the day off work! So I emailed my boss, who told me she couldn’t say no to me about F1! So the stage was set, I was going to Silverstone!

Now, I am sure you are all wondering who this mystery family member is! Well I was too before Friday! So, my dad’s grandmother Ada had a brother called George. George had a son called Peter, Peter is my dad’s dad’s cousin. Still following? Good! So, it was Peter who texted my dad, and was with him and his son Phil that I went to the Formula One. It was the first time I had met either Peter or Phil, and I must say they were even more F1 mad than me, something that I enjoyed very much! I arrived at Peter’s house on Thursday, and we spent hours talking about Formula One, as well as having the classic 2008 British Grand Prix on TV in the background. It was at this point that the next surprise was revealed, our vehicle for the journey to the track, a Maserati GranTurismo, called Felipe Maserati (How brilliant it that?!).

So, Friday morning we set off for the track, our bags packed with flags, headphones and excitement. As I did not have any F1 shirts at this point of the day, I wore silver to support Lewis Hamilton in his Silver Arrow. Unfortunately, it was wet and raining as we made our way to the track, and it was still pouring as the 1hr30m session began. While there was little action on the track, the atmosphere in the stands was electric. Whenever a car came towards club corner everyone seemed to sit up a little bit in their seats, and there was an almost audible intake of breath and a deep sigh as they chose to go into the pits.

As the session went on this kept happening, though I was just so happy to be seeing cars at all. Then all a sudden one driver decided it was time to skip the pit and go around again. To the joy of the crowd it was Brit Paul Di Resta! Cheers went up as the water created a rooster tail of spray behind him! It took a little while for another car to follow suit. It was the Toro Rosso’s of Ricciado and Vergne who started setting times first, and it was Ricciardo with the fastest time.

With around 20 minutes if the session to go the rain eased slightly and more and more cars ventured out to do laps. Most kept i on the track, Pic had different idea. As he was entering the final corner, he lost the back of the car, spun, went through the gravel and hit the barrier. Luckily he got out of the car injury free.

Between the two F1 Practice sessions we got to watch the GP2 cars practice. As it was drying out they were able to have a proper practice before their qualifying later in the day. It was an hour session, and while they were going round I realised that some of these drivers were the future of Formula One. These are the young drivers who could well be the next World Champions; they could be the next Hamilton’s, Vettel’s, Alonso’s, Button’s and Raikkonen’s. Who knows maybe one will be the next Michael Schumacher!

On the GP2 practice was done there was a 1hr30min break, which could only mean one thing! It was shopping time! Now when I say shopping time, I mean mainly window shopping, as I am still a student, and there were a lot of things that were about £200! However, I did treat myself to a really nice Mercedes AMG t-shirt, plus I was able to get the boyfriend a birthday present (which I can not reveal as he tells me he reads this blog!) and got a Mercedes AMG Michael Schumacher bear for my sister, she loves he cuddly toys. This was all bought in the F1 village, which was full of all sorts of fun! Not only was there all the merchandise stalls, but you could have a go at a pitstop, you could drive in a simulator and so much more! There was also a huge stage with musical acts for those camping for the whole weekend, which you may have seen in the build up to the race on SkyF1 when Johnny Herbert and David Croft took control of the Microphones!

With the shopping done it was time for Free Practice Two, and the rain had stopped, which meant the talk turned to which tyres the drivers would be starting on. Would they start on the Inters? Or would it be dry enough for slicks? The answer was slicks, and many of the teams opted to test the prototype slicks provided by Pirelli. It was a hive of activity out on track, with teams looking to make up for the loss of running time in the morning session. In fact at one point 20 cars were out on track. The noise was absolutely immense! They just zoomed past and I just could not believe the difference between live and on TV.

It made me realise just how much I love this sport. Even when there is all the politics, feuds and controversy you can just go and sit there and listen. Listen to the engines, watch the car go past right in front of your eyes.

So, once the beautiful team that is Mercedes (sensing a bias here?) showed their speed by posting the fastest lap, it was time to head back for an F1 themed dinner! Peter was very clever with this, and I think I may have to steal the name at one point. We had Pasta Maldonado! It was a delicious meal of creamy chicken and bacon with penne, the perfect meal after a day in the wet watching the cars speed past! We were joined at dinner by Peter’s friends, Kevin and Shelia as well as their son Ben, who were joining them at Silverstone for the rest of the race weekend.

Over dinner the talk was all about the cars, and there was a great trivia question which I want to put to anyone reading! Can you name the last Constructor to win a race with a Maserati engine, who was the driver, where was the race and what year was it? Of course this can not be answered by anyone at Peter’s dinner table on Friday Free practice day! Give your answers in the comments. Get it right and you will gain the respect of all (because I don’t have a real prize to give out!).

Britain GP 2013 – Preview

After a long wait we come to the British GP. Testgate has been resolved, for now, and the Championship is hotting up! The extra exciting thing about this Grand Prix is that I will be there! Well, I say I will be there, I am going to Friday Free Practice! I will be taking loads of pictures, and post as many of them as I can here!

It should also be noted that it is Williams F1’s 600th race weekend! Can they pull off something to celebrate, much in the same way they did in Spain last year for Sir Frank Williams birthday?

British GP 2012

Last year saw Webber take an emphatic win, and become the first driver of the season to take 2 wins!
Last year saw changeable weather throughout the weekend, with qualifying being delayed by 90mins. When qualifying finally got going it was Alonso who took pole position in his Ferrari.

The race was very much based on the choice of tyre in the first stint, with the better strategy ultimately used by winner Webber, who used the soft first.

Last year was a slight wash out for the British GP, and I seriously hope it is a drier weekend, for both the racing and the fans attending the race. Who will win? Will Red Bull continue their upward curve? Will Alonso makes amended for his race last year? Will a Brit actually win? All will be revealed very very soon!

Laura is the girlfriend of Hulkenberg. There is not much known about Laura, in fact her surname is a mystery to me! She has been seen at some races, but not many.

Svetlana Kostyuk (Gutierrez)

Svetlana is the girlfriend of Gutierrez. Like Laura (Above) not much is known about Svetlana, although I do know her last name is Kostyuk. She has been seen at one or two races, but as Gutierrez is a rookie it is unsurprising that she hasn’t been seen at many!

If anyone knows any info on either of these two women then please contact me via the “contact me” page!
